The Comparison Of Sci-Tech Journalism Between People's Daily And The New York Times

Sci-tech journalism on newspapers between China and the U.S.has formed their own unique reporting style.According to statistical sampling analysis theory, based on quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis method,and using case comparing and theoretical analysis,this thesis is to compare the sci-tech journalism in the 10 years from 2000 to 2009 on People's Daily and the New York Times as the samples from the angle of macro-level,micro-level and the reporting style.Sci-tech journalism in the two newspapers has reached a certain percentage of pages in the recent decade, and the contents of reporting covers more and more widely. Chinese national technology policy,science and technology conferences, scientific and technological inventions and achievements are the focus of sci-tech journalism;medical health,network communications,and other contents which people with close relationship to are the second main areas of coverage. U.S. sci-tech journalism reports more of electronial-information technology,network communication and other content, like scientific inventions and technological achievements.China and the U.S.pay nearly the same attention on technological innovation,scientific and technological achievements,disease,medicine and health.China's sci-tech journalists often use sci-tech news as their writing genre, followed by sci-tech dispatch,and there is a big gap between these two.In the U.S., sci-tech news and sci-tech features are the main genres,and the applications of both are nearly of the same proportion.It is likely to use inverted pyramid structure and time-order in sci-tech news in the two newspapers.The structures of sci-tech dispatch and feature have no fixed pattern.Journalists usually structure the news in a logical order. But Chinese sci-tech news are in a linear structure, but the U.S. sci-tech journalisms are structured more twists and turns.Due to the position of the newspaper, the style of sci-tech journalism in People's Daily is less lively and flexibility and somewhat serious;reports the facts with the details of light performance;reports the good results in order to show the community's prosperity and harmony;pictures are used less frequently;the length of the news is medium,with fewer long-depth reports.New York Times'reporting style is relatively lively and easy;with more emphasis on details to make the article seem more substantial;pays more attention on images;there are lengthy reports.However, journalists always write news from the negative impacts. By comparing and researching, the social needs are the same reason for promoting the development of sci-tech journalism.Cultural differences,scientific and technological developments in different stages,and the dissemination subjects and receptors in the different qualities and needs,are the leading reasons for these differences in the content,style and structure,and the reporting style.
