In recent years, the internet has become a melt pot of various social trends of thoughts and demands. It has provided a convenient platform for the college students to express and exchange their ideas, to discuss about public affairs, and to become a part of the social, economic and political life. According to authoritative statistics, the internet has become the first media for students to obtain information and communicate. More and more college students get to university or social websites, leave messages and make heated discussions on blogs , forums , instant messaging websites and community net service websites. Discussions on hot issues always produce waves of debates and strong repercussion in the universities or even the society. Consequently, the management of college student online public opinion has become a novel and important area of the ideological and political education of college students. Therefore, higher education institutes should reinforce their work on online public opinion collection, research, and assessment, and attach importance to its control and guidance.The paper proposes the concept of online public opinion management on the basis of domestic and foreign research on online public opinion. It takes ideas from public opinion, internet communication, social control theory and public psychology as its theoretical support. The research is conducted through questionnaire data analysis and case analyses of online group activities. The paper is focused on the main characteristics, transmission mode, the formulation and evolution mechanism of college student group online public opinion. Through analysis, it proposes the common procedures and methods of online public opinion control and guidance.
