Fiber optical communication become one important method for information transmission.At the same time with the development of the communication capacity and communication network, The demanding for the optical transceiver modules have become more and more important. The mutual reinforcement of the technical development between the optical transceiver module and the fiber communication network has hastened the intelligence function of the optical transceiver module. Digital diagnosis function of optical transceiver module provided one low cost performance monitor method.By digital diagnosis function of optical transceiver module, people could monitor real-time parameters of optical transceiver module, such as temperature, power voltage, bias current, optical power of each side.These parameters could help technical staff forecast the fault, find the fault position of optical link and compatibility verification.By forecasting the failure, technical staff can displace the unit that may be an invalidation,the expense of invalidation is less.By malfunction orientation, the workers can find the fault position of optical link in a short time,the time of repairing becomes shorter. By compatibility verification, we can analysis the working environment of module according to the data sheet or the relevant standard, in order to supply the optical transceiver module for appropriate working environment. It is clear that the use of digital diagnosis function simplifies the maintenance work and enhances the reliability of communication system.On basis of the above, this paper makes a study in the small form pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver module with the digital diagnosis monitor function, and does a deep study of optical module principle, digital diagnosis principle, I2C bus principle, SFF—8472 MSA agreement, implements the hardware design and software design of the monitoring system for optical module,giving a common monitoring design mean of the SFP optical module with the digital diagnostic function.In the controlling part of the design of the monitoring system for optical transceiver module,the paper adopts micro Control unit (Atmega128L)with a good flexibility and cost-effective, substituting for traditional control chip with the digital diagnosis function.The five main parameters includes the temperature,power supply,bias current, transmit power and receive power of optical transceiver module can be displaied through the LCD-controlling part, so that the parameters can be displayed in real time, the results are intuitive, easy to understand.In the design of real-time communication with the computer, a lot of notebook computers do not have serial port, so in the monitoring system it implements USB interface communication, makes the system a wider range of applications.Verifiable experiments shows that optical monitoring system meets the requirements of SFF—8472 MSA criteria.It has high practical value and could be used for field application.
