Currently H.264 video codec is a hot research field comparing with other video compression technology. In the same image quality, the compression performance of H.264 is much better, and therefore it is considered the most potential of applications video coding technology. But the H.264 high compression ratio achieved is the cost of high complexity of its algorithm. Because the algorithm is so complex, that it requires a higher performance hardware platform and general-chip has been incompetent. Therefore, implementation of H.264 technology depends on the development of digital signal processors. At present, many companies and research institutions have developed a video processing equipment of H.264 video coding standard based on DSP.The main part of this hardware system is TI's DM642 video processing chip. DM642 chip is widely used in the field of video processing with its high speed data processing, low power and low resource consumption. TI's DM642 chip is specifically designed for video and images processing and it is an ideal platform for H.264 codec. In the thesis, the hardware overall system based on DM642 are introduced and the principle of each peripheral module is also showed, which build a good hardware platform for real-time encoding. The thesis presents the bottom drive system of each module, which can be stable and in time to provide video data for the upper H.264 encoder. The thesis uses T264 as the source code. Although the DM642 has a powerful digital video processing capacity, but the chip internal resources can not be unrestrained useed. Because of relatively simple structure of the source code T264, DM642 chip's internal resources can not be fully proper used. So the thesis optimizes the system in the part of DM642 hardware resource utilization including EDMA data moving, reasonable allocation of storage space and compilation rewritten for CPU core resources. The thesis gives some experimental data and the result proves that the optimization for the hardware resources can significantly improve the system's speed and the system's real-time video processing. The thesis finally gives the system's overall test results. The results show that the system has reached the target, as well realize the basic functions of H.264 and can be used in stronger real-time environment.
