Digital video has large amount of data that makes video storage and transportation difficult. Digital video coding is one of the key technologies to resolve this problem. VCEG of ITU-T and MPEG of ISO/IEC promulgated the international standard of H.264 based on summarizing the latest and efficient research achievements. The standard has recommended the latest direction of video compression research works. Now, H.264 as a new international standard has been accepted widely based on its high compression and better image quality, many company and constitute are developing the products based on H.264.H.264 adopted much brandnew technology, such as intra prediction, motion estimation with highprecision and multimode, 4X4 integer DCT transform and quantization, UVLC, encoding sytanx with layered and so on. With these algorithms the enoding performance is highly boost, but also the complexity, so some common processor cann't satisfiy the demand with high complexity. So it's meaningful to research and analyze H.264 deeply and evaluate the performance of algorithms used in H.264, and it is alsousefull to design a fast encoding algorithm.Based on reading a large amount of related literatures about H.264, firstly, the paper introduces and analyses the realization and performance of every key algorithms in the H.264 detailedly, and gets lots of useful conclusions. Specailly the author focus on the part of motion estimation that occupy the most CPU resource and designed a fast search algorithms about it; experiments showes that this algorithm surpasses the algorithms used in the test model of H.264(UMHexagonS);Secondly the author discusses the problems about the hardware platform of H.264 real time realization. DM64X, produced by TI Company have so strong capacity of parallel processing and signal processing that it is considered to be just the ideal platform. The dissertation gives the whole system scheme based on DM642 and also some design of some key modules, and these work establish a well hardware platform for the real time realization of H.264; Finally the author discusses how to write module driver in DM642 and the key points to realize video encodec in DSP.
