As one of the most important machines in construction sites, tower cranes efficiency and safety are crucial to the whole construction process. A surveillance system for tower cranes is represented. This system provides high-quality images captured from industrial camera to both on-site operators through a monitor and managers through wireless GPRS network. Also the system is able to track the movement of the hook using machine vision algorithm.There are three main parts: 1) the wireless surveillance module uses S3C2440 chip as its CPU. Through the built-in embedded Linux system, this module can perform functions such as the A/D conversion of video signal, digital image acquisition and wireless transmission through GPRS network. Also with the help of OpenCV we develop the algorithm that can track the hook automatically. 2) Module control program on the server is used to communicate between different modules, including receiving image and sending commands. 3) WEB service on the same server enables the clients to access to wireless modules using WEB browser conveniently with the AJAX technique.
