The Design Of Information Commons Model In University Libraries And Example Analysis

With the rapid development of the network technology and rising accummulation of literature resources in university libraries, the abundant network resources, electronic resources and database resources have formed a new informative environment in university libraries. At the same time, the requirements of users are changing constantly. As a result, it is in great need of innovating the concept of library service.Information Commons, a new library service model, which can not only support the individual study and group research, but integrate technology and service, comes out. Since 2005, Information Commons has developed into a general thought from a throughly new concept. As regards to the defination of Information Commons, there maybe many kinds of explanations. But one concensus of all the explanations is "Reader-centered". And this kind of "one-stop" spacecombination which can integrate space, resources and services together is a great innovation of university library service model.Information Commons, risen in the university libraries of European and American countries in 1990s, has become the most popular service form of foreign university libraries. With its rapid development, the theory of IC has become more complete and most of the foreign university libraries have already established Information Commons, of which practical mode is getting more and more mature. By contrast, Information Commons of domestic university libraries are still on the initial stage, and most of published papers only introduced the foreign experiences while systematic researches in this field are correspondingly very few. This paper firstly summarizes the experences of IC in foreign university library, then it designes a theoretical model for domestic universities with Chinese characteristics.This model is more comprehensive.It not only involves the space design and resource allocation, but also embraces the management model and other relevent areas of IC. Furthermore, it takes Shandong University of Technology as an example and conceives the IC of Shandong University of Technology according to the designed model.
