In the early 2008, South of China experienced worst snow disaster. Continuous freezing weather makes a lot of electric power transmission line and tower on the ice thickness of 50 ~ 100mm, much higher than the design value of 10 ~ 15mm of technical standards.Icing caused power towers collapsed, and paralyzed large power transmission network,triggering traffic flow, coal tension, poor communications, electricity, water, forest destruction and other issues. According to statistics, the direct losses caused by disasters snow up to 253.05 billion yuan. Painful lesson causes us to reflect, if at any time to realize the power grid transmission line or tower of ice thickness and accurate detection, we can take effective preventive measures to avoid ice and snow which caused the disaster.This paper is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation project "ice thickness sensor and detection methods" (item number: 60672028), Shanxi Province returning to homeland people who study abroad key project"Shanxi Province all-weather basin river course state of the water telemetry system"(project number: 2007-2), and Taiyuan City, innovation and entrepreneurship students special projects (Project No: 09122005) .The project research process of original theory applied research object surface ice cover thickness automatic monitoring technology transformation. In recent years, based on the air, ice and water to achieve different physical properties of ice thickness on the automatic detection is put forward to a new river ice and ice thickness of sea ice detection. Based on this principle development's ice thick sensor obtained the practical application in the Chinese 21st, 22, 24 South Pole scientific expedition sea ice observation project. Based on the air, the ice and the water electronic resistivity characteristic difference, the paper author has done the massive foundational mechanism experiment under the laboratory environment. According to the analysis of experimental data measured and combined with the specific surface ice conditions, designed and developed in the laboratory under simulated ice surface ice-line monitoring system.This article includes the following sections:First: in the lab for air, water and ice, the resistance temperature characteristic, author has carried on the multiple repeatable experiment, to get a lot of experimental data, and verifies the research and analysis on the air, water, and ice, water under the condition of hybrid electrical resistance has obvious difference.Second: detail of the surface ice-line monitoring system for the composition, structure and working principle .Third: introduced the surface ice vision sensors, structure, working principle and the Data Acquisition hardware, software design process.Forth: introduced the PC Monitoring Software Implementation.Using air between the Resistance and ice on the ice thickness to achieve automatic detection, is a new surface ice thickness detection method. Thus there may be applied for high-tension transmission lines and fixed tower, offshore drilling platforms, building or all the equipment surface and impending stents, forest and twigs cladding ice thickness of real-time automatic monitoring engineering applications.
