This thesis, by analysing the news reports on China's real estate and the sources of them, aims to find out the tendency in reporting real estate news as well as the reason and its resulting consequence. Such an analysis enables us to find out the interest groups active in China's real estate industry and ultimately reveal the forces determining the generation of news relating to the real estate industry. The research data show that the major sources of the news about China's real estate are the Party and Government organs and their staff, vested interests groups and their high rank managers as well as the well educated elites. In contrast, most of the common people have little say. Their opinions are actually influenced by the mainstream official publicity. The severely unbalanced channels of news sources reflect the reality of news reports in China's real estate industry. The publicity of China's real estate industry is mainly dominated by the vested interests groups who are powerful politically, economically and culturally. They have access to important news resources and information and are eager to make their voice heard. The disadvantaged groups, by contrast, due to their lack of news resources, their inefficiency in using mass media as well as their weakness in making themselves being heard, are in a disadvantaged position in news reports. In order to build a democratic society, we should pay more attention to the disadvantaged groups rather than report news which are not in line with the reality of china's real estate industry. If such situation continues, the born of a real mass media is impossible and the democratic process will be delayed. When an unbalanced news report pattern in real estate industry is nominalised to some extent, the agenda setting and functions of the news reporting of China's real estate industry will fall into the hands of a few vested interested groups, which will inevitably harm the interests of the public. This will eventually damage the credibility of China's news media. When the damage grows into a vicious circle, the unfair distribution of power and social resources existed will be further worsened, and the road to democracy will be more winding and bumpy. In a corrupted society, the mass media is its accomplice.
