Due to human or natural causes, air pollution accidents are caused inevitably by the exploitation of natural gas. These unexpected accidents not only seriously threaten people's lives and properties, but also severely undermine the ecological environment in which human beings live. The system based on GIS is established to forewarn the air pollution of the natural gas field. And it helps the decision-makers make a better emergency response and advances the sensitivity of air pollution accidents and the timeliness and effectiveness of the emergency work. Then it assists people to reduce the harm caused by the accidents and ensure the utmost security of the environment. Therefore, the system is very important for the natural gas exploration and production. And it is of great practical significance to research and establish the system.The forewarning of air pollution usually needs to give the relative information of the accident quickly which includes the type, the location, the scope and some other areas affected by the pollution potentially. That is needed to analyze both the prediction of the pollution and the impact caused by the pollution. Then the former which depends on the mathematical model of air dispersion is the basis of the system. So this paper analyzes the application of CALPUFF model in the simulation and prediction of the air dispersion. Meanwhile the latter which depends on the geographic information system (GIS) with spatial analysis capabilities is the key to assist the emergency work. Also this article analyzes the solution by the development of GIS based on ArcGIS Engine components.In addition, this article researches the approaches for the combination of the air dispersion model and the geographic information system. By the integration of the two parts, a solution is given finally for the software of the air pollution forewarning system.The software of this forewarning system chooses ESRI's ArcGIS Engnine components as the basis for GIS development and chooses CALPUFF system as the air dispersion model. Moreover Visual C# NET 2005 is selected as the development environment. And SQL Server 2005 and GeoDatabase are selected as the system database. Five function modules are developed in the system respectively including the map management module, the weather forecasting module, the concentration calculation module, the pollution display module and the report module. After receiving the accident report, the emergency department can directly run the system software to track and assess the development of the accident with these modules. The system will achieve the visual result of the pollution based on the accident circumstances and the weather conditions. And the result will attach the detailed forewarning information. Also the system software provides lots of data and graphics interfaces which are clear and intuitive. Consequently it will support the emergency staff to make the scientific judgments and decisions.
