With the rapid development of computer graphics, virtual reality technology is increasingly used in military, aerospace industry, education and training, entertainment and many other fields. Plant is an essential content in virtual reality scene, but because the plant in the structural is complexity makes plant simulation in virtual reality has been an important issue. High-quality, efficiently carrying out of large-scale vegetation simulation is of great significance.After studying in production of virtual interactive systems and vegetation simulation, we propose a method to implement the virtual interactive system including forestry. In order to solve the conflict between system overhead and visual effects in forest simulation, we developed a Virtools plug-in which can simulate a large-scale forest by using SpeedTree data. To reduce the amount of data, the plug-in uses forest culling algorithm to cull the virtual forest and modeling forest based on Mixed-Level Modeling approach reduced the need to address the amount of data; To improve visual effects, the plug-in uses programmable pipeline enhanced the picture quality. In order to create the virtual environment, we use 3ds Max to create virtual environment, and it effectively solved the problem of modeling complex scenes and controling the amount of data; In order to add interactive function to the systerm we useds Virtools to combine the virtual forest and virtual environment, at the same time, implement interaction between users and system. The method was proven feasible and effective by running Jiufeng Forest Park Roaming System.
