Through more than 20 years of development, digital video encoding and decoding technology has achieved great success, widely used in network video-on-demand, video conferencing, national security and entertainment in all aspects of life. With the popularity of a variety of applications and demand from a variety of video applications increasing, the new video compression standards are continuously emerging. MPEG-4, which is made by the Moving Picture Experts Group, is one of the latest international video codec standards. It is the first object-oriented video compression standard. MPEG-4 is designed for a variety of applications of different grades, including a variety of advanced video codec technologies. Designer can choose appropriate technologies depending on the application. With a high compression ratio and great design flexibility, MPEG-4 has been widely used in a variety of video fields. In video applications, our ultimate goal is to watch video by visual, it is necessary to design decoder for the compression video. ADI's DSP BF561 is a general-purpose digital signal processor for various video and image applications, which has two identical Blackfin processor cores. Its advanced memory management mechanism and multiple DMA channels can achieve high-performance MPEG-4 video decoding algorithm. In full knowledge of BF561, we transplant MPEG-4 decoding algorithm to BF561, and according to the characteristics of embedded systems, by making rational use of BF561 hardware resources, the effective allocation of memory space and assembly language optimization algorithm, greatly improved system performance and achieve performance of real-time decoding standard video.
