In the application of digital signal processing, the traditional digital signal processor (DSP) and application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) can not meet the requirements of high processing speed, low power consumption and application flexibiliey. Application Specific Instruction Set Processor (ASIP) combines the high processing speed of ASIC and the programmability of DSP. In recent years, ASIP is becoming a new study field of hardware realization. This paper contains the following three parts of work focused on the design of ASIP and its application in MIMO-OFDM.First, the design of an ASIP based on Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture was introduced in this article. And three typical ASIP parallel processing structures based on RISC were designed, such as single instruction multiple data (SIMD), multiple instruction multiple data (MIMD) and tight coupling architecture.Second, an ASIP with very long instruction word (VLIW) architecture was designed, and the design method of ASIP based on VLIW was described, such as the selection of the register file structure, the selection of the register file size, the design of the function units and the instruction format.Third, the ASIP technology was used to achieve 1024 points FFT and 4×4 matrix inversion based on Xilinx FPGA Virtex5 LX85, which are the typical applications of MIMO-OFDM. Experimental results show that our approach obviously has better performance compared with other methods.
