Detecting fire by video monitoring is a significant of ensuring the safety of people's assets and lives. Video based monitoring system, mainly simulating human's way of making decisions, has been concerned more and more on the application in fire detection at present, with its fast detection and high precise decision. This paper mainly studies the design of embedded video monitoring node based on ARM platform and Linux operation system, including the collection, compression and network transmission. In this paper, the video fire detection software and hardware platform are constructed with ARM9. Meanwhile, the image compression algorithm is introduced and multipath image network transmission is achieved by socket and IP networking technology, which can offer the most direct and timely information of fire to the uplevel servers. Compared to the conventional video monitoring system, the proposed system is superior with its simple structure, small size, low cost, and high reliability. This system is particularly suitable to some places that require strictly in size and energy consumption.
