Since the introduction of the h-index in 2005, the h-index has generally been well-received by the international scientific community and library and information science. The h-index research has been rapidly become one of frontiers in metrology information and academic evaluation. This paper reviewed the existing research results of h-index, then carried out empirical research to the topic of h-index of cross-data sources in scholars, academic journals and academic institutions three dimensions based on ISI web of science and Scopus two comprehensive abstracts citation database. The author randomly selectsed 10 remarkable achievements scholars in each field by subject categories from the ISI HighlyCited.com as researching sample of scholar level. The author selected top5 journals by impacted factor in respective fields by subject categories from Journal Citation Reports as researching sample of academic journal level. The author selected the universities from Academic Ranking of World Universities 2009 edition of Shanghai Jiao Tong University as researching sample of academic institution level. Based on ISI Web of science and Scopus, the author collected h-index samples selected by this dissertation from 2000 to 2009, then analyzed the relationship of two sets of h-index and explored h-index of cross-data sources as a new evaluation index. With the purpose of comparison among different data sources, The author proposed arithmetic mean h-index Am-h and geometric mean h-index Gm-h for the conversion of h-index which come from different data sources. The principal innovation of this dissertation is to propose h-indices of cross-data sources—Am-h and Gm-h,and explore the feasibility and availability of new evaluation indices on multi-dimensions in order to provide reference standards of academic evaluation.
