Artificial intelligence technology led to the emergence of intelligent instruments. With its many advantages, intelligent instruments have been widely used in homeappliance, scientific research institutions and industrial enterprises. The vast needs ofthe intelligent instruments urged the birth of a more competitive new method in itsdesigning period to improve product design efficiency. This paper applies theunderstanding of implicit-verb sentences to the intelligent instrument design, so as toachieve the automation of instrument design through the analysis of thenatural-language-oriented user needs, for the purpose of improving the efficiency ofproductdesign. This paper analyzes the implicit-verb sentences comprehensively, summarizes upthecharacteristicsandlawsoftheimplicit-verbsentences fromthecomplexanddiverselinguistic phenomena, and makes a new classification from the semantic point of view. With the semantic characteristics of each type of sentences, the basick processingstrategy of the implicit-verb sentences is planed. Based on the strategy, and with thenatural language understanding technology available, the processing model of theimplicit-verb sentences is established finally, which makes use of knowledge templatesto represent the static knowledge and dynamic knowledge used in the implicit-verbsentences process. The model makes abstract summary for the two core nouns of thespecificsentencethroughclimbingtheconceptsubordinationtreesfromtheconnotationand extension of the concept in order to determine which specific type the sentencebelongs to, then selects the appropriate processing strategy to analyze the semantics ofthe sentence, and ultimately gets the meaning of the sentence. Finally this model isintegrated into the overall natural language understanding framework and used in thefield of intelligent instrument design, for which a professional knowledge base isestablished and then combined with the processing strategy of the model. With which, the meaning of the implicit-verb sentences in the design specifications for intelligentinstrumentscanbesuccessfullyunderstanded.
