Recent years, Market demands of embedded products have been increasing, and the production value presents a growing trend ceaselessly. The development of embedded systems has become a hot point in information technology industry. With the great influence of ARM Company and Microsoft, it is a mainstream to develop embedded products based on hardware platform with ARM core and the operating system Windows CE in embedded field. However, it is not so easy to design embedded systems because either the general design of hardware and software architecture or the applications of the key technologies have certain difficulties for many development technologies aspects are involved in it. In the development process, key technologies have become the main factors on the progress of embedded products development.Traditional industrial image acquisition and processing systems are mainly made up of CCD camera, image acquisition card, and personal computer (PC). The systems have been widely used, but there are drawbacks such as complicated, costly, bulky, and high-power. As the progress of sensor technology, microelectronics, and the development technologies of embedded systems, to develop micro-image acquisition systems with different kinds of interfaces, intelligent control and intelligent processing functions is possible, and to overcome the above shortcomings becomes a reality too.In this paper, for the deficiencies of traditional image acquisition and processing systems, the development technologies based on the hardware platform of ARM and the operating system Windows CE have been studied through taking the control of image acquisition system, data acquisition, transmission and other issues as the experimental study contents. On the one hand, it would be reference information for embedded system engineers; on the other hand, it offers a new solution for designing image acquisition systems. It gives a comprehensive solution to a development issue of image acquisition system. The following tasks have been finished:1,The ARM architecture was analyzed, and hardware selection ways of ARM platforms was summarized;2,The structure of Windows CE was analyzed, which include the kernel module, the file system module, the networking and communications module, user interface and graphics system module. The development methods and processes on how to build embedded systems were outlined, too; 3,The hardware development platform of embedded image acquisition systems was designed, which include the core board, the circuit module of image acquisition, etc.4,The software platform of embedded image acquisition systems was designed, which include the customization and transplantation of operating system, the realization of Boot Loader, the development of Touch Panel driver, the development of Video A/D chip, the realization of testing interface program, etc.Through the above-mentioned work, it verified that it is feasible to build the development platform of embedded image acquisition systems by using S3C2440 and Windows CE. The versatility and scalability have been taken account during the whole design process of the development platform. By using the platform, portable devices with multi-purpose image acquisition and intelligent analysis functions can be developed conveniently. The technologies can be widely used in the image recording and analysis systems of monitoring, public security, transporting, national defense, etc.
