Product data management (PDM) is a product-centric, which can integrate all product-related information and the process, and make unified management possible. PDM can not only make the product data consistent, up to date and safety in its cycle life, but also provide engineering and technical personnel a collaborative work environment. Thus the enterprises, which use PDM, can short the product development cycles, reduce the costs, improve the quality and gain a competitive advantage for themselves. PDM is regarded as the most direct and effective way to solve the information management problems, which are meet by many domestic companies during the production development and manufacturing process. However, the small and medium mold enterprises, which are special for the customer-oriented mold demand from other enterprises, single order and production and some other production characteristics. At the same time, a large amount of money is needed to imjplement a moderate PDM project, which is a huge cost for most of the small and medium die&mold enterprises.The organization structure and the operation process of the mold enterprise are summed in this article, and the classification methods of the mold's structure are came out, how and why the data is produced during the mold design are analyzed to draw a conclusion. After the analysis of the enterprise's requirements, referring to the advanced architecture standards, norms, guidelines and related agreements of PDM systems for other areas, integrating the unique properties of die&mold industry, the basic framework of the PDM for mold is established, which can greatly support the operation of the small and medium die&mold enterprise. The PDM system is mainly composed of six functional modules, mold project management, mold structure management, drawing and document management, purchasing inventory management, information retrieval database management and personnel and authority management. The modules can meet the requirements of effective management for product information in small and medium die&mold enterprises. The main characteristics of the system are the refine core system of product data management and suitable operation process of the mold data. With these practical functions, which are tailor-made for the fund-shorted and change-quickly small and medium die&mold enterprises, there will be more using in the future. The research and implement of the PDM system are based on Java EE development environment, which is configured by J2SDK 1.6, Eclipse 3.4 (Ganymede) and Swing framework. MS SQL Server2000 and JDBC database interface are mainly for the design of the database system. Requirements of effective management for mold data are basically realized in small and medium die&mold enterprises. Taking injection mold enterprises as an example, the architecture and functions of the PDM system are illustrated.
