As the development of Internet technology and multimedia technology, web-based education has made great progress. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence, pedagogical psychology, multimedia technology and so on form a new area, Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), which gives the personalized learning a good way. It is a research topic worthy of deeply exploring that how to improve learners' learning efficiency in the web-based learning environment by applying traditional ITSs' personalized and intelligent tutoring.This thesis explores how to give learners personalized tutoring by making use of the technology of ITS and natural language dialogue in the. web-based learning environment. Firstly this thesis analyzes the characteristics of web-based learning environment and the past, present and future of ITS. After pointing out the background and productive meaning of this research, this thesis presents a model of intelligent dialogued tutoring robot. This thesis has done the following researches.It presents a student model and its XML representation based on IMS Learner Information Package Specification. It also constructs a student model miner which can produce the xml files of student models by extracting LMS's database. Then the xml files of student models are indexed so as to search and retrieve by this system's other modules.It introduces knowledge representation called Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) and proposes an automatic method of extracting course knowledge from SCORM compliant courseware.It proposes a Chinese word segmentation algorithm based on Double-Array Trie structure and word frequency. After implementing this algorithm, it also constructs a word segmentation module for this system, which can offer word segmentation service.It combines AIML knowledge base and student model to give students tutoringIt introduces a kind of animated character agent as the UI of this system. The agent can imitate human's voice and face, which significantly improves the User experience.
