Wireless Sensor Network is an emerging information acquistion and processing technology which intergrates sensor technology, MEMS technology and communication technology. It shows extensive application prospect different area, thus becoming a focus in international research. Wireless sensor networks are usually consist of a large number of low-cost, low-power senser nodes, which are generally equipped with sensing, data processing and communicating capabilities. As a result, the hardware constraints combined with the deployment of large number of sensor nodes have posed many challenges to the network protocol for wireless sensor networks.ZigBee is a wireless networking standard developed by ZigBee Alliance to address the unique need of low cost, low power and low rate WPAN. Compared to other wireless communication techniques, ZigBee processes the following advantages: low power consumption, low cost, flexible, reliable, fast and easy deployment and so on. With the characters described above, ZigBee is well suited to wireless sensor networks and becoming the first choice. This dissertation studies the related technologies about ZigBee protocols for wireless sensor networks. The background of WSN and ZigBee is introduced first. A route discovery method based on limited flooding is proposed to reduce the communication overhead of ZigBee route discovery. Subsequently, a novel tree routing protocol--TR4MRN, based on ZigBee tree routing is proposed for mobile robot navigation applications. An improved version ZigBee stack with TR4MRN is also implemented on CC2431 to study the performance of the protocols. At last, a mobile robot navigation system is built, and the experimental results demonstrate validity of this ZigBee stack. This dissertation is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant No. 60535010.
