Nowadays, real-time infrared scene simulation has become an important research subfield in the realm of infrared simulation, and it can be widely used in military and civilian areas, such as the designing and evaluation of infrared imaging guided weapons and infrared training simulation.Research on real-time infrared scene simulation system is made, and a modular real-time infrared scene simulation system is preliminarily implemented. The simulation system builds a"target-background-atmosphere-infrared imaging system"synthetic model conforming to the process of infrared imagery. Atmospheric effects and infrared imaging system effects are fully considered. Based on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) programmable rendering pipeline and OGRE (Object-Oriented Graphics Rendering Engine), the simulation system performs the infrared radiometric calculations and generates real-time infrared scene image. Some techniques are employed to achieve real-time performance. Those techniques include approximations and simplifications to the radiometric equations, surface temperature pre-computation, atmospheric transmission pre-computation, etc. The simulation system is of good extensibility and lays a foundation for further improvement of the system.
