E1/Ethernet Bridge is an equipment that bidirectional transfers data between E1 interface and LAN. E1/Ethernet Bridge is widely used in data transmission network of telecommunication; however, its core technology has been monopolized by foreign communication chips suppliers. The purpose of the paper is to implement an E1/Ethernet Bridge using general communication chips instead of the application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC).Ethernet module, HDLC module, El module, as well as address management module are the key modules of E1/Ethernet Bridge. The El module is implemented by FPGA, while Ethernet module, HDLC module, and address management module are implemented by ARM. The principle and realization of the sending and receiving module of E1, HDB3/CMI coding, CRC checking, as well as system clock and slot selection have been studied. The design of HDLC interface driver and Ethernet interface driver of S3C4510B based on ARM have been completed. The data stream processing using FIFO model in order to reduce congestion in Data Transmission has been proposed. Address self-learning and time-sharing management based on Hash has been used in the ARM system to realize Network Bridge address management. The whole system has been implemented on a hardware platform by PCB layout with Protel software. After the hardware design and debugging, the problems of FLASH and PCB layout have been resolved. The results show our solution is feasible and the system performs well.
