The old management information system (MIS) of the People's Education Press has long been the reference sample of MIS in the publishing industry ever since it came into use in 1997. However, due to the limitations of the terminal simulation environment and the system functions thereof, it can not meet the great demand of the current business.Based on in-depth research and detailed analysis of the current business, this new system provides and realizes a brand-new management mode of managing data stream by work-flow with respect to the characteristics of the business of the edition system. Furthermore, the new system incorporates a great number of information maintenance functions and adopts a pushing/step by step user interface. The new edition system ensures a data inheritance of the original system, and guarantees a consistent use of the data of the original system. It also provides a sound interface with other subsystems, such as publishing, distribution and the financial subsystem. The new system is based on IBM AS/400 server and DB2/400 database system. The operation and development of the program is based on the component-based technology of EOS (Enterprise Operation System). The design and implementation experience of the new edition system has a high reference value for the publishing industry in general and other similar industries employing systematic management. This paper focuses on the analysis of the edition system's requirements; and discusses the system design methodology and demonstrates the implementation result on such a basis. Furthermore, the benefits and shortcomings of the system are analyzed and summarized based on the practice to further improve the system design and the implementation level.
