Cooling system is very crucial to a plastic injection mold, and its design process is cumbersome, which makes implementing the cooling system in plastic injection molding CAE software an important and challenging work. HSCAE is the newest generation numerical simulation commercial software for plastic injection molding, which is developed by HuaSu Software Research Center of HUST. This paper focuses on the analysis, design of the cooling system of HSCAE, and implementation of some key functions. The RUP software process and Object-Oriented method are used in the development of the system based on the modern software engineering. The functional requirements of the cooling system are deeply studied and a use case model is built. Then an analysis model is created to refine the use cases by following the tasks and steps of the analysis phase of the RUP process, which completes the analysis of the cooling system.Reuse of software design patterns is a primary form of software reuse, which is an important approach to solve the efficiency and quality problems of software development. Many design patterns are used to design the cooling system, this paper demonstrates how design patterns be used to solve the problems by taking command pattern, bridge pattern and composite pattern as examples.Good CAE software must have the ability to exchange data with CAD software easily. IGES is one of the most popular CAD/CAM general data exchange standards, by studying its file structure and data format, an IGES processor is implemented. It can be used to import entities from IGES files to HSCAE or to export entities from HSCAE to an IGES file.Insert cooling is an import cooling method, to support the cooling insert as a core in HSCAE, two schemes are presented: One is to make the meshes in the overlapped area of the part and the insert identical by copying the part's meshes; the other one is to detach the part and the insert by shrinking the volume of the insert. The first scheme is precise but very difficult to realize, the second one is easy to realize but may affect the precision of the numerical analysis's result. Both schemes are studied thoroughly in this paper.
