In recent years, the research and application of Virtual Reality have got a rapid development. Virtual Reality is a newly developed technology involved in many fields, which include Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia Technology, Human-Machine Interface Technology and so on. Virtual Reality has become one of the main research directions in the development of computer application technology.Virtual walkthrough system is the synthetic application of Virtual Reality, it enables users to view and experience the virtual environment freely through real-time interaction. The establishment of the virtual walkthrough system is involved in the studies of the 3D modeling, the storage of model data, collision detection and optimization of scene display. These studies will directly influence the roaming fidelity in the virtual environment and the running efficiency of the system.In allusion to the disadvantages of VRML and other technologies of realizing virtual walkthrough system, the writer chooses Java3D technology to implement the virtual walkthrough system by the merit of its interactive 3D graphics API, and discusses Java3D development tool. The dissertation takes the difference of models in the scene into accounts, does further research of all kinds of modeling building technologies, selects mixed modeling technology to finish the construction of scene models, and realizes the organization and storage of scene data by XML technology which improves the flexibility of program. The dissertation discusses the collision problem of human-machine interaction in the virtual walkthrough system, chooses the method of collision detection based on the line of sight as the collision detection algorithm of this system. To improve the real realization of virtual scene, this dissertation adopts LOD technology to optimize the scene display, and improves the efficiency of drawing algorithm.In a word, this dissertation analyzes the Java3D development tool and the key technologies of the virtual walkthrough system in different degree, gives the corresponding realization method, and realizes the virtual walkthrough system finally.
