With the fast development of computer graphics, the software and hardware technologies, the virtual reality technology becomes one of the most famous research spots nowadays. The application of the virtual reality technology based on VRML has been focused on by many people, and has been widely used in many areas. The JAVA 3D technology, which is the expansion of Java language in the three-dimensional graph domain, is a group of application programming interfaces. By the advantage of the API, the Java 3D technology has been applied in many fields such as computer aided teaching software, three-dimensional games and animations based on the homepage, etc.For the research on the road dynamic vision simulation, a system of urban virtual walkthrough based on the 3D graphics technology is developed. Firstly, specific technologies of VRML(virtual reality modeling language) JAVA3D and XML are analyzed in this paper. Secondly, this paper pays more attention to the modeling of the urban road three-dimensional landscapes, discusses the matching of the scene graph and the terrain pattern, introduces the foundation method of the three-dimensional visible scene, analyses the collision detection in this condition. On the basis of the studies, this paper divides the structure of the urban walkthrough system, constructs the 3D model of this system, and programs the urban virtual walkthrough based on JAVA3D. Finally, this paper uses the C/S pattern as the fundamental system structure. After the development of customer end and the server end, the simulation of the urban virtual walkthrough system based on the C/S pattern is developed, which provides a demonstration platform to the urban administrators and designers.
