A Study On Communication Barriers And Strategies Of Academic Journals Based On Open Access Publishing

The academic journals are important media to load and transmit scholarly information. They play an essential role in recording,archiving,exchanging,disseminating and sharing scholarly information.But following with the serials pricing crisis and permission crisis,the academic journals,which are based on traditional business publishing,meet with all sorts of barriers in communication process.The traditional business model of publishing,as a result of its own publishing procedure and the commercial operation pattern,has hindered the scholarly information communication to a certain extent.Open Access,as a new model of publishing periodicals,may remove the barriers brought by periodicals price rising unceasingly and the copyright limitation,alleviate "serials crisis",and impel the scholarly articles fast published and disseminated in the worldwide scale.This object of study in this thesis is determined for the academic journals based on the open access publishing.Focus on the academic journals of open access,this thesis tries to do some researches in its current situation,the essential factors of communication process,and the communication barriers.(1)By investigating and studying the articles about open access published in the domestic and foreign academic journals,the author knows about the development status of it,discovers the breakthrough point of this thesis.That is to say,the author will study the academic journals of open access from the perspective of communication science,and analyze the various kinds of barrier factors during the communication process of academic journals of open access.(2)Though document surveys and statistics of data,this thesis analyzes the development status of the academic journals of open access in home and overseas.The status quo includes four aspects,the first is the geographical distributions of journals,the second is the quality of journals,the third is the subjects of journals,and the last is the languages of journals.(3)To further study the factors of communication barriers of OA academic journals,the author introduces some classic theories of the study of communication.(4)Connected with the features of the academic journals of open access domestic and overseas,the thesis analyzes the five elements of communication process,and studies their causes of formation.The five elements includes communicators(writers,editors and peer experts,OA publishers,information intermediaries);communication contents(journal articles and scholarly information);communication channels(networks);audiences(network readers or users);communication effects(knowledge,attitude and behavior).(5)In view of the communication barriers,the thesis proposes some feasibility countermeasures.
