The tunnel is a special section of highway, its exterior and interior environment varies greatly. The tunnel illumination needs to be set for solving the problem of chauffeur's dark and bright adaptation to ensure the security of tunnel traffic. While most current tunnel illumination systems are very simple, the tunnel illumination regulation is not adjusted with the factors of tunnel exterior luminance, vehicle information, tunnel smog concentration and so on. There exists the problem of increasing the tunnel brightness blindly, which may bring the problem of traffic security and waste of energy. These systems do not comply with the design specifications and the requirements of national energy policy.In this paper, firstly, the current research status of development tunnel illumination and intelligent lighting control is introduced. Then, in view of the problems of current tunnel illumination control system, the whole wireless tunnel illumination control system frame based on the ZigBee is proposed. The characteristics of each kind of current tunnel illumination lamps are analyzed and compared, and the economic cost-effectiveness comparison between the high-pressure sodium-lamp and LED-lamp is explained in detail. According the analysis the LED-lamp is chosen as the tunnel illumination lamp because of the high performance-price ratio. Based on the analysis of ZigBee protocol and network establishing process, the design of wireless cluster tree tunnel illumination monitor and control network is presented in detail. The CC2430 module is adopted as the wireless network node hardware solution. The software design and data processing flows of the coordinators, routers and terminal nodes are described specifically. The wireless adjustable LED-lamp using ZigBee module is designed, which can meet the system requirements. As it is difficult to establish a precise mathematical model including the illumination control parameters and the lamp illumination efficiency, the tunnel illumination fuzzy control program based on the expertise is designed and embedded in the control system designed using WINCC. Finally, the system test is accomplished which verify the feasibility of the proposed system.
