Chinese traditional festivals condense the Chinese ethos and national sentiments, and bear the weight of the stem of culture and the essence of thoughts. It is the important spiritual bond to hold together the unification of the motherland, national unity and social harmony, and it is also the precious resources of building an advanced socialist culture. Today, we are experiencing an era of economic globalization, which accompanied by a prominent issue of the tendency of the convergence of world culture. A growing number of national cultures are fading out of people's view gradually. Profound traditional festivals, which are waiting for us to carry forward and make use of, are advantaged cultural heritage and the precious resources of our nation's survival and progress. From 2008, China appended the three traditional festivals, Mid-Autumn Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day and Dragon Boat Festival, as statutory holidays. It is of great importance to carry forward Chinese traditional festivals.And now, when it is the best time to pass down and carry forward traditional festivals, as the preferred medium of public access to information, television media has took on the heavy responsibility of spreading it. Based on that, this article looks back on the phenomenon of television broadcast during traditional festivals in 2008. With TV programs of traditional festivals as the object of study, this article discusses the television broadcast of traditional festivals issue from multi-dimensional aspects of Cultural Studies, Communication Studies, and Television Arts. The article is divided into five sections to elaborate television broadcast of traditional festivals.The first part is the introduction part. It is an overview of the current situation of television broadcast of traditional festivals at home and abroad, and explained the significance of this article.The second part is case study. Based on some TV programs of traditional festivals on CCTV and Hunan TV during Spring Festival, Tomb-sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival in 2008, this part classified and analyzed its program type.The third part is the research of audience. In this article, the research survey was targeted at the audience in Chongqing, mainly young audience. Such issues as traditional festivals and the behavior when watching TV program of traditional festivals and some related questions is done through questionnaire survey, and has formed an analysis which has a certain reference value. It provided reference data to the better implementation of television broadcast of traditional festivals.The fourth part is the analysis of the passing down of traditional festivals. Through the analysis of the current situation as well as the research of audience, from explaining its cultural connotations and the implements of passing down traditional festival cultures through television, this article attempts to put forward a media view of passing down traditional festival cultures through television.The fifth part is the conclusion part. It re-emphasized the importance of passing down traditional festivals through television, and made some supplements and expectations to some other aspects of the passing down of traditional festivals through television.
