Chinese doctoral students now increasingly submitted their paper to international journals, but they often encounter some difficulty both in writing and publication. This study investigate the condition and difficulty of English academic writing by quantitative survey, in-depth interviews, text analysis, ethnographic case studies of the manuscript submission process, analysis of editorial correspondence. Forty participants completed a questionnaire regarding sorts of information on paper writing and publication, and then five of them were interviewed with details. Finally, one of the interviewee was chosen as the participant of case study. After that data was explored to find the successful methods for teaching and learning academic writing in English and promote the quality and quantity of Chinese doctoral student's international publication. It was found that language is still the obstacle of English academic writing for Chinese doctoral students, which brings various problems, such as collocation, vague expression, conclusion overstatement, or failure in communication with reviewers etc. Besides, criteria of reviewers of international journals are more than language. They focus mainly on the value, originality, novelty, and ration of the paper, which are the real defects of Chinese doctoral students and ignored by English writing teaching. The students who experienced successful publication are all positive, confident, and more international. These findings underline suggestions for improving English academic writing and publication. Meanwhile they are also valuable to eradicate academic departmentalism in China and enhance ELT/EAP professional development.
