In the development of virtual reality systems, we focus on many aspects in order to achieve real and fast immersion and interactions, including networking, rendering, physics simulation, data synchronization and hardware support. A high performance easy-to-use framework can greatly lower the difficulty and cost of virtual reality system development. On this basis, we studied the typical existing frameworks and present a distributed virtual reality framework built on SAGE (Simple Adaptive Grid Engine) in this paper. The framework has two major characteristics: 1) It is simple yet with good performance. Distributed computing technology is used to decrease the system latency and there is no need for special graphics hardware support. 2) It is friendly to application developers. SAGE middleware is used to provide transparency in distribution and the framework encapsulates the common VR operations. Cluster computing is also supported. Performance and scalability are tested in the experiments and the result shows the good performance and scalability of the framework in medium-scaled and small-scaled VR applications.
