In recent years, with the rapid development of the space technology, the remote sensing data volume is growing larger and larger. The contradiction between limited channel capacity and the large volume of remote sensing data is extremely serious. It brings a lot of trouble to data transmission and storage. On the other hand, great redundancy is still contained in the image data, which makes it possible to compress the data. Great attention is paid to data compression technology as an effective method to solve the problem. Compared with the conventional image compression technology, the research of the remote sensing image compression technology starts later, but it is very active in recent years. Due to the high real-time, low-complexity algorithms of the remote sensing image compression, the wavelet transform technology in its mature theory, low-complexity algorithms and high-performance image compression is being used more and more in the field of remote sensing image compression.This thesis discussed the basic principles of wavelet transform and the framework of wavelet transform image coding system, and then gave a deep research on the image compression coding theory based on CCSDS and DWT. A CCSDS encoder design and implementation in hardware based on FPGA is presented. Compared with JPEG2000 algorithms, the CCSDS algorithms could achieve a competitive compression performance and occupy less resources, so the CCSDS is more suitable for remote sensing image compression.
