The network processor has been widely used in data network access equipment for its hardware level processing performance by adopting flexible software system. Its outstanding performance exactly matched the 3G system service access and transmission characteristics. Therefore, it has the important practical significance to research how to employ the network processor in bottom protocol in 3G systems.First, RNC software architecture and hardware architecture were described in this paper. Then, UTRAN network interface protocol was summarized and analysis the AAL2/AAL5/IP protocol in RNC bottom. Finally, the policing/shaping/scheduling algorithms for traffic management were studied. And these protocol and algorithms were realized by detailed design of RNC interface board driver software and micro-code. The test model was build based on practical application. The function and performance of the bottom protocol processing software was verified by detailed test cases. It indicates that using software can accomplish the function which needed several application-specific processors before. RNC products provided flexible and rich physical interface and achieved wire-speed processing capability. In addition, it lower development and maintenance costs, reduce the load of RNC internal processing module, and simplify architecture. Furthermore, the interfaces traffic management capabilities ensured services quality and strengthened the compatibility in the network interface.The research results had been applied successfully for RNC equipment development and realization in Datang Mobile Communications Equipment Co. Ltd.
