With the development of communication network technology, Ethernet processingdevice based on general-purpose processor or dedicated ASIC chip plays a very importantrole to handle the complex variety of business applications. However, with thedevelopment of optic transmission technology, general-purpose processor is becomingbottlenecks in network data processing, the lack of programmability in the traditional purehardware-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) makes it lack the flexibility to keep up thespeed of modern networks. Therefore, the existing network processing equipment can notmeet the practical application of network data processing requirements, but the emergenceof network processors can solve the above problems. This paper maily addresses the architecture of network processor and its forwardingmechanism. Through the programmable pipeline hardware architecture and micro-codeinstruction set, the next-generation routing and switching platforms is designed andfully tested. This paper first describes the status quo of current development of Internettechnology changes, The second chapter analyzes the network processor packet processingplatform system architecture of the network processor system, research the processmechanisms of control plane and forwarding plane. Chapter III presents the relevantnetwork processor peripheral interfaces, such as: CPU Interface, TI interface, and anexternal micro-engine interface; The fourth chapter analyzes the programmable pipeline ofsoftware design, done by microcode module VLAN, IP module, MPLS’s hardwareforwarding and forwarding table entries of the design; Chapter five with specificenvironmental testing, test results are given; Chapter VI summarizes the full text.
