LCD controller is a graphics and image displaying control chip for liquid crystal display applications. It is designed to provide synchronous control signal and display data to the LCD panel with data processing function. For recent years, the demand of consumer electronics product has been growing a lot, such as mobile phone, portable multimedia products and digital camera. This trend not only increases the LCD market, but also brings a bright prospect for LCD Controller.Based on the analyses of the functional demand of LCD controller in display systems, a Text/Graphics LCD Controller with embedded character matrix was designed and prototype verified. First, through the research of frame rate modulation arithmetic for the enhancing of gray shade display, an optimized frame rate modulation arithmetic was proposed, this optimized arithmetic extend the modulation to the 3D space, and the modulation is dynamic for each gray shade pixel, for the display process of a still image, it can ensure the average brightness is fixed, and insensitive to different image. Second, an optimized technique is performed for the mechanism of updating display address, solved the limits to the microprocessor's access speed and time of other products, and enhanced the performance of display. Third, on the display output control, a technique based on modulation of shift clock's period to synchronize data was proposed, using this technique can achieve the same display performance without wasting another data duffer. In this dissertation, the LCD controller is described with Verilog HDL based on UMC 0.25μm CMOS Standard Cell Library, the logic verification was performed using ModelSim software, and prototype verification are performed by using Xilinx Virtex2 xc2v1000. A detailed discussion of the FPGA prototype verification environment is presented. The results from logic and prototype verification show that the LCD controller can meet the expected performance requirements.
