Networking and intellectualization is the development tendency of sensor. IEEE 1451.4 proposes a mechanism for adding self describing behavior to traditional analog sensors. CAN bus is one of the most widely used Field bus, which has many advantage such as high reliability, high real-time capability and low cost. CAN bus is mainly used for many fields, such as process industry, machinery industry, robot, sensor and so on. This paper is based on the ongoing Digitization Demonstration Project which is being carried out by China Ship Science Research Center (CSSRC).The design solution of Sensor Automatic Recognition based on CAN bus is discussed in detail, which surrounds the process of constructing data acquisition system for deepwater towing tank.First of all, the working principle is proposed. The selections of scheme about sensor junction box and sensor gate are studied according to the practical requirement after knowledge about the embedded system is introduced. Then, network communication and CAN bus communication are studied deeply. A TCP/IP stack based network communication protocol named DNP1 and a customized CAN application layer communication protocol named DNP2 are designed respectively. Finally, IEEE 1451.4 standard is discussed in detail and sensor connector for identifying sensor's status is presented according to the practical requirement. Also, the hardware construction and the software protocol stack about getting the equipment identifier are emphasized.The design solution of Sensor Automatic Recognition based on CAN bus realizes that experimental equipments can be automatically recognized by data acquisition system for deepwater towing tank. It improves automatization of data acquisition, enhances the efficiency of experimental staff, adapts to data acquisition system required by CSSRC as the experimental base for large ship capability.
