In recent years, with the rapid development of video network industry, Video-on-Demand service making use of broadband network, one of interactive multi-media services for users, is very popular. However, with growth of the number of broadband subscribers coming from far and near, the development of VoD media system was influenced and conditioned because of deficiency of architecture of the traditional VoD.There are no uniform development standards in the traditional solutions of distributed VoD system. The services provided by the system can not been changed dynamically according to the users' behavior and resources can not been allocated in accordance with different demands. There are some issues in the field of traditional distributed VoD system in WAN, for example, heterogeneous, scalability, and standards and dynamic management problem. In order to share resources and meet users' dynamic demands in highest degree, grid technology and its advantage is adopted in my video grid study based on the project "study of VoD system based on streaming scheduling", which is one of the Beijing Education Committee research projects.Video scheduling and transmission technology in video grid environment is major focus of my study based on Globus Tookit4 and the OptorSim, which is the European Data Grid simulator. Completely security deployment of GT4 is first step in the process of research. Second, in order to maintain reliable and convenient data transmission efficiently among video servers, GridFTP protocol and tool is researched and tested after analyzing the problem of data transmission between server and server. Then, a modified scheduling solution based on global load-balance algorithm is raised for the secondary developemt of OptorSim, which is constructed into a video grid system according to vital feature, a large number of simultaneous requests from users to hot video programs in video network. The result of simulation experiments shows that, the research solution effectively reduces the bandwidth's consumption of the backbone network and promotes the service capabilities of the entire system. At last, a VoD prototype system of B/S mode in LAN is developed according to WSRF standards. The experimental system can provide video-on-demand service for users. This system is based on Open Grid Service Architecture. The system program developed with WS-Resource is platform-independent and extensible. Besides, the system implements auto-management of video resource information based on MDS of GT4.
