China and India, the two biggest countries in Asia, have many in common. Being both developing and most populous countries, the two countries have a relationship of competition and cooperation though such a relation has not always been positive in the history because of the changing international and domestic contexts. 2007 is the commemorative year for the 60th anniversary of India's independence, as well as the 57th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Indian diplomatic relations. We think it significant and necessary to review the history and the status quo of Sino-Indian relations which has been framed in mass media. The dissertation uses frame theory and The People's Daily as the case in the studies of the frame formation in reporting Sino-Indian events. According to Thomas K(o|¨)nig, "frames are basic cognitive structures which guide the perception and representation of reality. On the whole, frames are not consciously manufactured but are unconsciously adopted in the course of communicative processes. On a very banal level, frames structure, which parts of reality become noticed."In this research, we expect to find out what frames The People's Daily, the official newspaper with the largest circulation, has formed unconsciously in its reports on the Sino-Indian stories in the past 57 years and whether there are some clues to the connection between these frames and the formation of China's audience's viewpoints on Sino-Indian relations. This research is based on a sample covering the relevant reports about Sino-Indian affairs from 1950 to 2007. The findings and discussions will focus on the frames which are cleared up, such as 1950's "Sino-Indian Friendship Framework", 1960's "Warfare Framework", 1970's "The restoration Framework", 1980's "Warmer Framework", 1990's "Standard Framework" and "Amity Framework" in the 21st century. Problems and suggestions will be offered to help the media and the audience better use the media.
