Because of the solid network foundation and the long-term accumulation of the Ethernet-Accessing research experiences, nowadays, Ethernet has become the most popular networking protocol used in LANs. The introduction of switching technology is a very important step during the developing progress of Ethernet, because while it maintains the investment to the original facilities of the network foundation, it improves the performance of Ethernet significantly, which makes it more valuable in practice.PC(IPeripheral Component Interconnect)bus is one of the most popular buses used in multimedia filed in recent years. Because of its rich functions and excellent performance, PCI bus is the first choose not only for PC local bus, but also for peripheral devices bus of advanced Network Processor.With reference to the research project"HiNOC(High performance Network Over Coax) Access Technology Research", which our laboratory is in charge of, this paper focuses mainly on the principles of switching and control, which includes the application of fast Ethernet switching, embedded communication processor MPC8270 and PCI bus in the embedded system. What is more, the circuit implementation of switching and control modules on the HiNOC switching and HiNOC Bridge device, is realized in this paper. This paper also provides the test and debugging methods of the Fast Ethernet switching and PCI driver module in the environment of embedded real time Operation System VxWorks'multitask. In practice testing, good performance shows that the software has been well designed.
