Research On OAIS-based Long-term Preservation Of Digital Information

Nowadays, digital information is everywhere in our social life. However, although massive information is being produced continuously, it is very difficult to be used safely and reliably in a long term due to various factors.The more terrible situation is that those information carrying human culture and civilization is disappearing gradually. So how to take scientific and reasonable measures to preserve such information effectively has become a very urgent problem which every country should face seriously. Therefore, long-term preservation has become a hot issue in the fields of library and information science. At present, many foreign libraries and institutions are doing research and practical activities on long-term preservation from different aspects, but in our country, only a few libraries have conducted a tentative exploration. Based on this background, the thesis discusses long-term preservation of digital information based on OIAS from perspectives of preservation framework and preservation system.Firstly,the thesis reviews research status of long-term preservation both in China and abroad, then presents challenges from technology, management and law aspects, and then introduces OIAS which is raised to face and cope with these challenges. The third part of the thesis describes information model and function model of OAIS in details, and also makes deep analysis about migration and emulation technology. The fourth part of the thesis analyzes and summarizes experience and inspiration useful for our country by doing research on projects in USA and EU which give support to OAIS. On the basis of above, the fifth part of the thesis evaluates and analyzes the preservation framework system assumed by researchers in our country, then creates a long-term preservation framework, constructs preservation system model and architecture for university libraries in China.DSpace and Fedora which are bottom layer of preservation system are also analyzed and compared thoroughly. In the end, in order to solve the problem of selecting preservation format, the thesis proposes a quantification analysis method and exemplifys it fully.
