A Study On The Technological Application Framework Of Digital Resource Long-term Preservation In Medical Library

Preserving and providing information are one of the main tasks of libraries. Long-term availability of information is impossible if it is not well preserved. Just as library collection of physical information resources should be safely housed to protect them against the effect of detrimental environment factors such as flood, fire, decay and theft, digital information resources should be well stored in a digital repository and managed in a reliable manner. The library should construct its preservation system of digital information resources to ensure the"continuous indefinite access to the future records stored in digital electronic forms"if it plans to provide the long-term, stable, and reliable information services for the information users and to maintain a living and developing space in its academic information communication and service system. The key technologies used in constructing"the long-term preservation system of digital information resources in medical libraries"are analyzed in this paper with its stress laid on the planning of long-term preservation of meta-data"in medical libraries.This paper is consisted of 5 parts. In the first part, the necessity and feasibility of constructing a preservation system of digital resources in medical libraries and its role in meta-data preserving standards for long-term preservation of digital information resources are expounded, the status quo in research of meta-data preservation at home and abroad are outlined, and the necessity of working out the"long-term meta-data preservation standards for digital resources in medical libraries"is pointed out. In the second part, the functional requirements of a long-term preservation system of digital resources are dealt with and the functional framework of"long-term preservation system of digital information in medical libraries"is discussed based on the OAIS reference model, with the technologies involved in constructing long-term preservation system of digital information in medical libraries described. In the third part, the structure and elements of"long-term meta-data preservation in digital resources of medical libraries"are discussed. In the forth part, the semantic structure standards for"long-term meta-data preservation in digital resources of medical libraries"are elucidated. In the last part, the main contents in this article are summarized and the unsolved issues in constructing the long-term preservation system of digital resources in medical libraries that need further research are pointed out.
