With the rapid development of economy, the requirements of life quality are becoming higher and higher. There are many problems existing in the traditional way of meter reading, such as disturbing residents'daily life, hiding threats, performing inefficiently, and making mistakes easily. In order to improve people's quality of life and increase the level of automatically managing, a solution of Automatic Meter Reading System (AMRS) is put forward, and several functions are implemented, such as measuring and collecting meter data, transporting data, accounting, charging and so on.In this paper, the technology of embedded system is applied in AMRS, the system design and implementation process is directed by the principle of HW/SW Co-design, the boundary of hardware and software is fixed appropriately, the embedded ARM microcontroller is used as the kernel to collect field data wirelessly and transport data by network. Meanwhile, meter data can also be read by IC card, handheld and GPRS.Practice has proved that the embedded ARM microcontroller STR715 possesses many advantages, such as plenty of on-chip resources, higher code density, faster running speed, and lower price, it is a cost-effective way to design and implement AMRS based on STR715, at the same time, it can reduce system volume and enhance reliability; the background charge and management system is constructed based on B/S mode, it can enhance system flexibility and make the maintenance work easier; the DFA theory is introduced into the implementation of meter reading protocol and facts show that it can make the protocol more accurate and reliable. In brief, the low cost but functional solution of AMRS proposed by this paper completely meets the market requirements, and has certain theoretical significance as well as broad market prospects.
