The storage area network (SAN) is a high-speed network technology which is similar to the LAN. High-speed connection can be provided between storage units and clients. To different with LAN, SAN optimizes the storage and backup using the special communication protocols like SCSI and FC, instead of the normal protocols in LAN way.With the development and consummation of the network infrastructures, SAN technology is being widely used thanks to its advantages. Today, most of the corporations are facing the challenge of the"Data Expand". It is because the reliability on the IMS is more and more heavy and the reduplicate copy of the original data."Data Expand"phenomenon required better usability, consistency, easier management and faster transmissions. More and more corporations were compelled to build the professional data storage & backup system and upgrade their scope, efficient, security and reliability.The paper made an introduction of the present research status & related application of SAN. Deeply research has been taken hereby for the software and hardware structure & theory of SAN. It introduce the basic theory of data backup, compare the methods of backup and restore on different level including their advantage and weakness. Besides that, the paper discusses the principle of the backup mechanism; deeply analyze the usage & management problem and the development aim of data backup for the moment. Particular research of the fiber channel is also included in the paper.ChanganSuzuki Automobile Co.,Ltd grows fast these years and the strong backstage storage support is needed for more and more task for key application system and data. Before, the most popular backup method is the DAS and the backup system including the distributed backup system or the backup system based on the LAN; all above storage & backup system become an obstacle of nowadays data management of the corporation since the insecurity of the data and the lower utilization rate of the storage resources. To sum up, to design a"centralized storage centralized unified backup"system is a very valuable work.Based on the advanced SAN technology and the backup policy application, the writer of this paper designed and allocated a NAS-on-SAN"centralized storage"system basing on the SAN and realizing the"centralized unified backup"in ChangansSuzuki Co.,Ltd. The real time online backup and LAN-free off line backup system have been developed also. The online backup is based on the snapshot technology which can make snapshot inside of the storage facility; it doesn't take the bandwidth between the host and the storage facility and doesn't influence the online business. The LAN-Free offline backup realized the consolidated management of the data backup and takes full advantage of the SAN high speed fiber channel bandwidth. It furthest avoid the pressure of the network application which comes to the traditional LAN transmission backup method. Also, the backup facility can be shared. Real-time online backup and regular offline backup are worked together insuring the security of the data asset.In conclusion, the induction of the SAN infrastructures, online backup and LAN-Free provided a storage method for all main IT application system of ChanganSuzuki, improved the management efficient of the system data asset, made a great contribution of the organization growth and management enhance. It also cut the cost of the company data backup system maintenance, lightened the manager's workload eased the management complex, further more, insured the security of the data asset, completed satisfied the"centralized storage"and"centralized unified backup"demand target. Thanks to its excellence integrate performance.
