As the fast developing of information technology and network technology, there are more and more needs for protection of data integrity,security, and business continuity. How to construct a high performance disaster recovery system to protect data from the disaster has become one of the most important issues in storage research area.Network backup is the key implementation of non-local disaster recovery, and at the same time network backup is the last defense of local data when disaster occurs. Command flow is departed from data flow as doing backup and restore by using a three ends construction which is composed of backup server, storage server and backup agent. This kind of design of network backup system could balance the load of servers within the system, which could improve the performance of backup and restore. Taking disk as device for storing backup data, which is called D2D(Disk to Disk)backup, could shorten backup window.Storage server is responsible for receiving backup data from network, organization and searching when restore data. The way of designing storage server is one of the most important factors which impact the backup and restore performance. According to the I/O features of file level backup, we organize and search backup data effectively by using a method of stratified organization of backup data and the stratified index mechanism. Stratified organization store and manage backup data assembly, which result in the fast restore by using searching method as data recovery. By using disk instead of tape as storage device for backup data could obviously shorten the backup time because of the better performance on I/O. Storage server consists of some important modules such as resources management, operation monitor, job concurrent processing, backup data organization and quick index. Stratified Index is composed of index creation, index storing, index management, index link creation and sorting, restoring with index.Test results confirm the validity of the design of storage server on improving the performance of backup and restore. By using the both two technologies, the performance of backup could be improved gradually when the size of backup data increases and finally comes to a stable state. The performance of restore is improved significantly while there is a little loss of performance of backup as the price, but when the size of backup data is increasing, this kind of performance loss of backup will descend, while the restore performance will keep stable, so the performance and the value of the whole backup system is improved.
