Network provides a rational and effective means to store and manage the increasing data; and simultaneously network introduces new hidden safety trouble, such as hack attacks, virus infections and operations by mistake. Data backup can strongly protect data, so it is an important task for network building to set up a powerful backup system.Considering practical requirements of network application, this paper probes into knowledge about data backup, analyses and compares network storage technologies; and the functions of some typical network backup softwares have been investigated. Based on the above, the paper brings forward a network backup system model, expatiates its design and development, and illustrates its software implementation by UML. The system adopts DAS (Direct Attached Storage) and C/S/S architecture, which embodies the characteristics of network storage, makes full use of existing network and is easy to extend. At present, file-level backup is widely adopted, but it tends to produce redundancy and to result in space waste. Using CVS and GNU Diff for reference, this paper presents difference-based backup to improve on file-level backup. In addition, increment-based backup is especially presented to aim at only-increasing files. Three methods are all provided to add to system flexibility.
