High performance pulse power supply is the key unit of TEA CO2 laser. It directly affects the output single pulse energy, repetitive frequency, average power and peak power. After analysis the characteristics of traditional switches completely, find that switch affect the power supply much. And if it worded on the utmost conditions, it will limits the ability of power supply. Using novel power semiconductor switch RSD(Reversely Switching Dynistor) as switching device, and combining with Magnetic-Pulse-Compression technology, high performance pulse power supply can be obtained. And it can improve the characteristics of TEA CO2 laser in theory. At first, the structure and operation theory of RSD switching device are analyzed. Compared to other switching devices, RSD has some special advantages, such as: high voltage, high di/dt, high switching speed and long life, etc. The operation theory of magnetic switch is considered. And the compressed coefficient is calculated of the Magnetic-Pulse- Compression circuit, and simulated by emulator. The result shows that Magnetic-Pulse- Compression do well on upgrade peak power and pulse compression. The design of the circuit for the high performance pulse power supply is present.According to the opening characteristic of RSD switching devices, the circuit for pulse generation is designed and proved by experiments. The results show that RSD has good opening characteristic when repetitive frequency pulses are applied, which imply that RSD switching devices can be used in the pulse excited power supply of TEA CO2 laser. These give some foundations of applying RSD switching devices in the pulse power supply of TEA CO2 laser.
