With the development of remote sensing technology and the appearance of the remote sensing device for plenty of remote sensing data, compression of remote sensing images is of more and more importance. As the original data is needed sometimes, the lossless compression of remote sensing images is necessary. JPEG2000 is the newest still image compression standard. It gives up the block coding style based DCT employed by JPEG. It employs multi-analyse based on wavelet transform and improves performance of image compression. In this paper we expand on the basic algorithm and key technology of JPEG2000, and compress remote sensing images using JPEG2000 algorithm.Adapting to the specialities of remote sensing data, the scheme of remote sensing compression is proposed in this paper, which bases on JPEG2000.In image compression processing, the redundancy is reduced after the procedures of DC levels shifting, component transform, wavelet transform. Then, the LL sub-band is compressed by EBCOT and create the lossless JPEG2000 code stream, and the high frequency sub-bands are compressed with distortion. There are two methods which introduced in this article, which are called the high frequency sub-band quantification and the high frequency sub-band component filtering.In first method, the high-frequency sub-bands are partitioned into 4×4 code-block. According to the variance of block, the code-block is differentiated as three classes. Compressing the textural block is at high fidelity quantization and the plain block,transition block is at high compression ratio. After the processing, the data quantity of the high-frequency sub-band is reduced and the ratio of compression is increasing.In second method, the high-frequency sub-bands are partitioned into 4×4 code-block too, which are divided into two classes. The plain blocks are considered as the background, and cleared the coefficient into zero. The texture blocks are compressed at high fidelity, which contain a lot of important high-frequency information.In this paper, the developing course of image compression technologies and various of current encoding methods are summarized, and remote sensing technology is introduced. In succession, the general information of the JPEG2000 still image compression standard is introduced, and each part of the JPEG2000 coder is discussed in detail according to the JPEG2000 encoding order. The statistical characteristic, similarity and statistical characteristic in wavelet transform field for panchromatic remote sensing image is studied . It concluded characteristic of remote sensing and provided the theory basis for the remote sensing image compression.On these bases, the whole compression encoding schemes are proposed, furthermore, the results of C++ emluator for this scheme are shown and analyzed. According to the experimental results, the two schemes attain good quality of testing remote sensing images. Especially, the performance of remote sensing image compression has the tangible effect.
