With the development of remote sensing (RS) technique in recent years, the RS images have growing applications in many different fields. Therefore, it's necessary to compress them efficiently because of the rapid increasing of the RS data. Because the RS images have the characteristics of large amount of information, low space redundancy and special applications, some conventional compression methods such as JPEG sometimes could not get better results. The establishment of the international standard JPEG2000 provides a new way for the coding of the RS images. It could well meet the RS image compression requirements. Among the JPEG2000 characteristics, the region of interest (ROI) coding is more important to the RS image compression. Therefore, this dissertation researches in several aspects as following.Firstly, the fundamentals of JPEG2000 are thoroughly researched, and the coding characteristics are systematically analysed. After the characteristics of the RS image and its compression requirements are summarized, the advantages of JPEG2000 are analysed. Furthermore, from application point of view, the coding efficiency is compared and analysed variously. These studies provide necessary theory basis for the application.Secondly, in order to solve the problem that the ROI could not be defined by the user on some conditions, and the application of the ROI coding is restricted, the ROI detection technique which is the key component of the ROI coding technique is studied. Combined with the summarizable analysis of the existing ROI detection techniques, an openness ROI automatic detection algorithm is proposed. The test results show that the algorithm is efficient. Then, based on the analysis of two ROI coding algorithms, combined with the characteristic of detection results, a fast ROI mask generation algorithm is designed. This algorithm is prior to the ROI mask generation algorithm recommended in JPEG2000, and the ROI coding time is reduced. Furthermore, these two techniques are unified under the JPEG2000 frame, and a RS image compression system based on ROI is designed.
