The study of microstrip antennas which has PBG structure is a newly arisen research area in recent years. In order to achieve miniaturization and enhance bandwidth, people have put forward many methods include using high dielectric constant material, matching network etc. But above the methods is easy to introduce the surface wave effect. The band stop characteristic that PBG structure possessing can suppress the dissemination of surface wave in certain frequency rang effectively, thus obviously enhances the directivity, impedance characteristic and gain, etc. In these days, research institution at home and abroad have been doing research on several PBG microstrip antennas.The thesis first expatiates on the nature character and basic theory of PBG structure, sums up its analysis method that is now widely being used, and summarizes its main application in the microwave frequency. Then it follows a brief introduction to the basic radiation principle and design means of microstrip antenna. The thesis also makes a discussion of several common analysis means, and fixes on essential modality, size and feed way of studied microstrip antenna.Secondly, the thesis puts up a detailed theory analysis of the high impedance surface PBG structure, and sets forth discussion of its transmission characteristic influence caused by each parameter of PBG structure. High impedance surface PBG structure and UC-PBG (Unipalar Compact Photonic Band-Gap) structure are respectively simulated through CST-Microwave Studios. Accordingly, each indexes of PBG structure is optimized, and quite ideal results are obtained in the required frequency range.Finally, three PBG microstrip antennas are respectively simulated through CST-Microwave Studio. The simulation results and the theoretical analysis tally very well, which proves many indexes of antenna can be improved effectively by attaching the PBG structure on microstrip antenna. Simultaneously, the circular polarized GPS microstrip antenna is manufactured. The satisfying results validate the accuracy of the theory research.
