In modern radio technology components such as communication, broadcast, television and radar system, the radiation and receiving of the radio waves are inevitably, then antenna is needed. As the development of microwave integrate technology and the need of low profile antenna, microstrip antenna is studied. In this few years, the appearance of the new technics make the radar and communication systems'characteristics increased, and decrease the power loss and the volume of the systems. The research of this dissertation focuses on two aspects: the microstrip array antenna of 24GHz and microstrip array antenna with EBG structures. The main context of this dissertation includes: 1. The situation of automobile collision warning radar (CWR) is introduced, especially pictured the history of array antenna of CWR. It is provided about the background, principle and application of Electromagnetic Band-gap structure. 2. Based on the requirement for the antenna of CWR, such as thin beam, high gain, little volume and planar structure etc, the design method of microstrip array antenna is research especially. Two different kinds of array antenna are designed, including 36unit and 100 unit microstrip linear array antenna. As the result of experiment, the beamwidth of 10×10 array antenna is ±4.5o, side lobe level is 20dB and the gain is 22dBi. When apply the microstrip array antenna in 24GHz radar system, the returning wave is good. The results show that the 10×10 array antenna can be used as the CWR antenna for a single object detecting. The excellent performance of the front end with microstrip antenna is one of the important steps for the miniaturization and practical application of this system. 3. Electromagnetic Band-gap, which is invented to inhibit the spontaneous emission in the end of 1980s, is a new kind of concept and material. In this paper the author focuses on the Electromagnetic Band-gap structure and its applications on antenna array. The experimental results show that the coupling of the antenna array can be decreased by the EBG structures.
